OPEIU Local 212 on Strike at Cornerstone Community Federal Credit Union
The 73 Union workers employed at Cornerstone Community Federal Credit Union have been working without a contract since November 2007. Eighteen (18) bargaining sessions, some of which included the assistance of a Federal Mediator, failed to produce a fair deal. OPEIU members rejected a tentative agreement back in June. The employer refused to meet for talks and in turn issued a Final Offer, which was again rejected by the membership. On August 12, 2008 the memberships rejection was followed by a strike vote. Striking workers began picketing on Friday August 15. The OPEIU is ready to resume talks at any time. Management has not showed any interest in resuming talks.
The history of some of our recent bargaining has net the following results: The 2004 4-year contract resulted in a two-tier wage structure and cost saving changes to the health insurance. In 2006, during the term of the latest contract, the CCFCU had hit a financial bump whereby the OPEIU voluntarily agreed to go to a single health insurance provider, saving over $90,000 in premium costs. Soon after this agreed upon change in 2006 the workforce was reduced by 13%, providing the employer with additional savings and the employees with more work.
Now during the 2007 talks, the OPEIU had conceded in the negotiations the traditional COLA increases that were historically part of our negotiated packages. Staff has not been restored since the 2006 layoff. Also during the 2007 talks the OPEIU has indicated that they are willing to share in the cost of health insurance, but we are dissatisfied with the plan that is being offered. Paying 5% of the cost of health insurance premiums for 2009 and 2010 is one thing; but implementing a new base plan can cause employees to be making contributions much closer to 20% of the cost of the premium. That is unfair. The credit union had record revenues for 2007 and is on track for positive revenues for 2008. They claim to be acting financially responsible. How is it responsible to allow a strike that inconveniences the members of the credit union and needless to say, costs the credit union in lost opportunity for business?
We look forward to returning to work with a fair deal and to provide the
first-rate service the CCFCU membership deserves.
